ABOUT US

Recognizing that girls face multiple challenges in pursuing an education, African Girls is employing a holistic approach to change the perception of the value of girls at the individual, community and institutional levels; foster an enabling environment for adolescent girls’ education; and engage and equip girls to make life decisions and important contributions to society. Building on stakeholders’ expertise, African Girls invests in new efforts to expand educational opportunities for girls—including in areas of personal health.

WITH ACCESS TO EDUCATION WE CAN DO AMAZING THINGS

In the United States, our ambassadors collect, sort, and pack gently-used books to ship to specific African communities. They organize book drives in local schools and neighborhoods and raise modest funds to ship the books to our libraries.

In Africa, we work with communities to build these libraries. They receive the books and organize them into libraries to serve local African communities. Along the way, the U.S. donors learn about Africa and develop closer connections to the people in the recipient communities.

We work with community leaders, local governments and the community to build sustainable libraries.

PERSONAL HEALTH CLUB

Girls around the world, without pads, use rags, mattress stuffing, banana leaves, feathers to manage their menstruation. Menstruation is perhaps one of the most regular individual female experiences, but in sub-Saharan Africa, the experience influences general society negatively due to the absence of products required by women and girls to cope with menstrual flow. Affordable and hygienic-sanitary protection is not available to many women and girls in Africa, which has serious public health consequences.

MENTORSHIP CLUB

In Africa, almost every child will grow without a mentor. Research has shown that positive mentoring relationships have a very strong positive effect on young people in a variety of academic, personal and professional situations. AG connects young girls to personal growth and development, and social and economic opportunity. Unfortunately, almost every child in Africa, especially the girl child will grow up without this opportunity.
